Check out this very nice large art 1961 SILVER AGE page, which was penciled by the great Jack Kirby, and inked by the great dick Ayers, from the story titled: "The Last Days of Pompeii!" Even while they were starting to revolutionize the comics industry with their radical heroic Fantastic Four artwork for Marvel Comics At this very same time, Kirby and Ayers played things more conventionally with this pocket-epic version of Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton's famous novel. The result is markedly different from the previous Classics Illustrated version of Pompeii (1947), which features artwork by H.C. (Henry) Kiefer. Here, Kirby benefits as usual from the lithe and emphatic inking of Ayers, even though the page composition is far more restrained than the Kirby-Ayers Marvel yarns. A Grecian elegance prevails, but of course the team's style is unmistakable. Kirby's new breakthrough with Fantastic Four #1 was only months away. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12" x 18.5" Sold
