Bernie Wrightson Cover to The Abyss # 1 (1970) If one can assign such title as "dean of horror" illustrator, Wrightson certainly is it. The Abyss, was an artist financed magazine drawn exclusively by Bernie Wrightson, Jeff Jones, Bruce Jones and Mike Kaluta produced by The Studio. The EC comic is composed of stories originally intended for the short lived Skywald publication, Web of Horrors. Unfortunately the production died after one issue after the printer only printed half the copies ordered and they ran out of money, which makes this cover extremely rare. The actual drawn Wrightson image measures 10.3 by 8 inches but the title logo is all drawn art above it, and the actual total board and image area measures 14.5 by 20.5 inches! There are interesting notes at the bottom for Jeff Jones so the entire "STUDIO" group understood how the rest of the book would be put together with THIS COVER! Just a great cover artwork here featuring a large demon, nude women, the walking dead, and several people in despair realizing that this giant Demon has just taken over the world! No cartoonist can capture the essence of horror quite like Wrightson, and this page would be considered by many fans as the "perfect" Wrightson piece! This is among the finest Swamp Thing examples you will find by the Master of the Macabre! From his groundbreaking work on Swamp Thing, into the "Studio" era with colleagues Barry Windsor Smith, Michael Kaluta, and Jeff Jones, and onto mainstream visibility in the 1980's with projects like Cycle of the Werewolf and Creepshow, Wrightson's accomplishments and influence has been as broad as any artist emerging from the realm of comic art. His work in comics and illustration art is in a class by itself among collectors and fans of the medium. Compare this nice cover art to the published comic book in the red link above! ALL HIGH end pieces of art, including this one, are able to be purchased with VERY fair time payment plan options, and trades are always considered towards this and "ANY" art on our website! Just send us an email to mikeburkey@aol.com and we can try to work something out.
