In 1958 the legendary Jack Kirby returned to work for the company that would soon be known as Marvel Comics for the first time since leaving in 1941 after he and his partner Joe Simon felt they were not getting their fair share of the profits from their creation of Captain America. Until there were enough superheroes to fill his very large plate, Kirby worked on short stories for Marvel's various genre anthologies. He's best remembered from this era for his mainly one-shot short science fiction stories featuring large monsters, including the two most well known of these creatures, Fin Fang Foom and Groot. This 'Twice-up' (large art) page from Strange Tales #85 was part of the story called "Return of Gargantus", a sequel to the creature's first appearance in Strange Tales #80. Gargantus is a huge sea monster with a beef against mankind. The dialog sounds very similar to the early Hulk stories. Gargantus is on the loose causing panic among the public. We see him confront the military. One man, a scientist, challenges Gargantus to a battle on the monster's home turn--under the sea which Gargantus thinks will be a no-brainer. On the finale page to this story we see the scientist come up with a way to send an electric current through the water, electrocuting Gargantus. Compare this great page to the published comic book page in the red link above. SILVER AGE pages are VERY hard to find in the hobby these days, so don't miss out on a great opportunity here to own this nice SILVER AGE page right here!
