Visionary artist Kelley Jones provided pencils and fan-favorite John Beatty provided inks for this page from Batman #548 (1997) showing the Dark Knight investigating a mysterious new crime outfit in Gotham. This issue marked the return of Penguin in Batman comics after many years, and this page features a rare flashback into the childhood of the villain. Jones' gothic take on Batman, which emphasized mood over realism with the character's flowing, pleated cape and extremely elongated ears, is perfectly captured on this page. Jones' Batman has been described as "otherworldly", which is an apt description. Kelley Jones was a beacon of quality for comic book art during the 1990s, producing highly memorable work for various Batman projects as well as some of the highlights of the historic Neil Gaiman series, The Sandman. He worked with Gaiman on two well-regarded single issue stories for The Sandman, "Calliope" and "Dream of a Thousand Cats." From there, he was assigned to be the main artist on one of the best multi-part stories from the series, "Season of Mists". Following that, Jones was offered The Sandman as an on-going assignment, but turned it down to work on what became the best-selling graphic novel Batman/Dracula: Red Rain and the follow up sequel Batman: Bloodstorm. He later had a long memorable run on the monthly Batman series. Jones was the main artist on the on-going Batman title from 1995 to 1998. The artist used a style which emphasized mood over realism, exaggerating many features of Batman's costume such as making his ears incredibly long and giving him an enormous cape draped over his body as seen on panels 1 and 2 on this page. Just a great opportunity here to own a great page from this GREAT title! Compare this great page to the published comic book page in the red link above.
