Tales of Suspense #37 p 13 LAST PG TO STORY (NICE HAAG THE HUNTER PRE HERO STORY & PAGE!) 1962

Check out this cool sci-fi 1962 monster story drawn entirely by the great Steve Ditko for the anthology title that would introduce Iron Man only two issues later. From the story titled: "Haag! Hunter of Helpless Humans" Ditko's unique artistry makes this climactic giant-monster page a delight all by itself. Compounding the interest is an unacknowledged conceptual origin in "The Most Dangerous Game," Richard Connell's famous short story of 1924. Stan Lee and Larry Lieber's notion of a hunter from outer space, in turn, prefigures the 1980 movie Without Warning and its more famous Arnold Schwarzenegger knockoff, 1987's Predator. That is a great deal of responsibility to impose upon an unpretentious proto-Marvel story from a period in which, essentially, Lee would make up a peculiar or exotic name (this creature is called Haag) and then assign Ditko or Jack Kirby to match the name with an original monster-drawing. The staying power of the midcentury Marvel books, however, has transcended their potboiler origins, and Ditko's art is a key reason for that condition.
