In addition to his iconic co-creations Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, Steve Ditko is well known for his short suspense stories that he illustrated for Marvel in the "Pre-Hero" era during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Ditko's style was highly distinctive and he was a master of composition as well as light and shading. This is the master artist's 'Twice-up' (large art) title splash to "Secret of the Statues, a suspense story that ran in Tales to Astonish #38 (1962). The Marvel Age of heroes was just getting going when this was published and Ditko continued to provide great suspense shorts during the same year he drew the historic first Spider-Man story in Amazing Fantasy #15. "Secret of the Statues" is a science fiction tale of an art critic who visits a sculptor to give him his opinion of his work. He tells the crestfallen man that his statues appear lifeless. The critic faints when one of the statues calls him a fool. It turns out the 'statues' were aliens attempting to pose as Earthlings in order to infiltrate our planet. They deposit the critic outside and depart Earth. Just a great opportunity here to own a great STEVE DITKO splash from this GREAT title! Compare this great Splash to the published comic book splash in the red link above. ALL art on our website (including this one) are able to be purchased with VERY fair time payments, and trades are always considered towards "ANY" art on our website!
